Beam Burst

After years of quilts made as gifts or to sell, this is the first quilt I made for myself. From a pile of found fabrics, mostly linens and linen blends, I decided to play with layers, piecing fabric together without trimming the excess. Allowing the colors and textures to build up and grow thicker. To gain dimension, softness and warmth, the way our bodies can if we stop worrying about the “excess,” about what we’re supposed to do and what other people think. Like many things in life, the project didn’t turn out as planned. I hadn’t accounted for all the sewing on the bias. The layering was difficult to sew through. At some point I realized I was over it. Instead of forcing myself to push through and finish what I’d started, I decided to make the quilt about ¼ of the original planned size. A quilt is a quilt, a body is a body, the size and thickness and layers are limitless.
