Licorice and Lace
April 2026
currently on display at the Multnomah Arts Center through June 27
This piece includes an actual licorice fern, framed by a stitched halo, embroidered motif, and length of lace. The thread and background is naturally dyed with homegrown scabiosa and indigo, as well as other plant materials.
Thanks to Wafa Ghnaim, a brilliant Palestinian artist and dress historian, from whom I was able to learn many refinements in cross stitching technique as well as some of the ways that stitching has been interwoven into the lives and history of the Palestinian people. Thanks to Amber Jensen, whose work inspired this piece in particular.
